disney & boys
anyone else notice how girly disney is? i mean it always has been with all the princesses and all... but seriously, i've noticed lately that all the shows are about girls... or maybe bc i'm a girl and it's more obvious to me. but nytimes also agrees!

Disney Expert Uses Science to Draw Boy Viewers
Some quotes I found interesting:"Actors have been instructed to tote their skateboards around with the bottoms facing outward. (Boys in real life carry them that way to display the personalization, Ms. Peña found.)"
"Disney Channel’s audience is 40 percent male, but girls drive most of the related merchandising sales."
"The guys are trickier to pin down for a host of reasons. They hop more quickly than their female counterparts from sporting activities to television to video games during leisure time. They can also be harder to understand: the cliché that girls are more willing to chitchat about their feelings is often true."
I dunno much about social factors and all that stuff, but could it be that because of the lack of appeal to younger boys they grow up to be more effeminate... than say 20 years ago? Or are they exposed to sensitive, "for older people" material at such a young age that they have become desensitized to material appropriate for their age? i have too many questions...
ms. pena looks scary.
alice said...and i never thought about the psychology/anthropology behind these tv shows/cartoons and the research that goes on... i wonder what it's like working for disney in that way. it seems rather like an evil scheme... O.o
